Class Notes Day 7, Sat 2/10 - Bodywork in the pool, 1st assessments (Chinese New Year)

 "The real meditation is how you live your life."


We are required to get (and pay for) 2 professional, Esalen-style massages. One from a teaching assitant, one from the spa staff. 

Bodywork in water
We met at the pool to do body movements in water with a partner - like Watsu
Used floaties just above knees. 
support client's head at neck, allowing ears to stay below surface
other arm supports under lumbar
move client through water, swishing slowly side to side
use back-support hand to open arms and legs
push torso down into water and let it pop back up
put client's neck/head over my shoulder for support then use both of my hands
   to move their body more freely
all is silent
take them back to pool steps
1 arm under knees, the other at neck, sit them up, press their feet to the step below
remove their knee floaties
close session and step away

"Assessments" (exams) 
I was first to work on Ngurah ("Nurah")
wanting to experience quality of my touch
long strokes
watching for client's breathing, and matching it with my hands moving
pauses to allow for integration of preceding touch

Conclusion of the week - summary, upcoming plans, misc:

Week one - foundation of Esalen-style massage is completed
Next comes structure
   Monday we will be working prone with Rob teaching (Ellen at dentist)
must trade at least 8 times - 4 to receive, 4 to give
   by the third week, we must massage someone NOT in the class

Begin and end all long strokes off fingers, toes, or crown of head

every Saturday we will have exams ("assessments")
we must give 4 massages and receive 4 massages - 
    3rd week we must give to a non-student
must receive 2 professional Esalen-style massages

laundry is taken every Saturday
for more protein, we can order chicken sate - 3 oz, 9 skewers 30,000 IRP
   please order ahead so kitchen isn't bogged down
local farmers' market is held 4:am to noon, local residents sell to other locals
   will have fresh foods as well as hand-crafted items
   Ellen will arrange for us to go at 6:am so we can be in class by 7:am

4:pm at wantilan today will be Chinese New Year tea ceremony by classmates!
dress in red or white if possible, but dress up some

Dragon Fruit and Banana

Dragon fruit grows locally, so it's always available to us. It's an intense magenta color inside, and a magenta/pink color outside. The skin is not at all prickly and is quite easy to slice through. The fruit texture is like a kiwi and takes no effort to scoop out. The taste is very pleasant - mild and sweet.  We also get local bananas. They are much smaller than those in America. The taste is just amazing! Yes, they taste like bananas, but with something like a vanilla flavor and tropical fruit flavor, too. The banana flesh is not as soft or slippery, but rather like ripe plantain.  I took the photo using the same cup's saucer and my bamboo spoon to give you a sense of the size.  By the way, our rooms each have two ceramic tea cups/saucers and two spoons. Since we didn't receive any plates in our coconut/bamboo food kit, I used the saucer - which I then washed, of course.

December 26, 2023, I hit "send" on my class enrollment and my flight reservations

This is what I'm preparing to attend:   Esalen Massage & Bodywork 175-hour training in Bali, Indonesia And this is what I look like tonight, doing so.  A bucket list item of mine for years has been to get a passport, so a few months ago, I applied for one. I had no particular travel plans but simply wanted to have one. My passport arrived on December 12, 2023. The next day, I received an email about a class I'd dreamed of taking for years, and I realized that I could check off another bucket list item - taking the Esalen massage class taught in Bali by Ellen Watson - if fear didn't stop me. I spent the next two weeks doing some research, learning all the details involved in such an intense and distant trip, and making some big decisions. With trembling hands, on December 26th, I finally hit "send" on my class and airline reservations. On the 27th, I had a meltdown.
