Good Morning, Reality Check Time!

No person is perfect. No place is perfect. Bali is heaven...ly, but not heaven. 

Most people, me included, would like to think that no creature is going to be visiting them while they sleep. But visits we all get from creatures of various sizes. 

Our rooms here are not as "hermetically sealed" as most American rooms and they open directly to the outdoors, so we get small visitors at all hours. Some leave "gifts" behind. As timid as geckos are purported to be... 

I woke up at 4:am (still a little jet lagged) and found this. At least geckos aren't dangerous. So we will continue to live together. 

I've seen them in my room before, shyly moving around at a distance. One pooped on my wall and it stuck - now that surprised me! Don't worry - it dried and fell down so nobody had to climb a ladder to clean it off.

The other day I was laying in bed, wide awake, working on homework. I heard some sort of creature-moving-around kind of sound, looked up, didn't see anything, and went back to work. When I got off the bed, I realized I'd dragged my heel through gecko poo. So it was that close and I missed it. I wouldn't mind quite so much if they'd at least let me see them and hang out for a minute or two before doing that.

    Thank you for allowing me to vicariously share some of your experiences, the school, the program, and parts of Bali beauty and culture. This is my reflection at 5:20 a.m. in America.

    I hope you realize that the bug in your picture is not a gecko. Geckos look like small green lizards usually 3-4". I've never known one to do anything inside Except hang on the wall-
    a version of a fly.

      Thanks for letting me know that my post was unclear. This isn't a picture of a gecko, but rather it's a picture of gecko poop. I woke up to find gecko poop on the top of my bedding and realized it had walked across me as I slept. I've found gecko poop several times already in my first week here - on my floor a few times, wall once, and bedding twice now. I've tried to get a good picture of a gecko, but they are so timid and fast-moving, that I haven't been able to. I've got several shots of gecko poop, though... LOL

Dragon Fruit and Banana

Dragon fruit grows locally, so it's always available to us. It's an intense magenta color inside, and a magenta/pink color outside. The skin is not at all prickly and is quite easy to slice through. The fruit texture is like a kiwi and takes no effort to scoop out. The taste is very pleasant - mild and sweet.  We also get local bananas. They are much smaller than those in America. The taste is just amazing! Yes, they taste like bananas, but with something like a vanilla flavor and tropical fruit flavor, too. The banana flesh is not as soft or slippery, but rather like ripe plantain.  I took the photo using the same cup's saucer and my bamboo spoon to give you a sense of the size.  By the way, our rooms each have two ceramic tea cups/saucers and two spoons. Since we didn't receive any plates in our coconut/bamboo food kit, I used the saucer - which I then washed, of course.

December 26, 2023, I hit "send" on my class enrollment and my flight reservations

This is what I'm preparing to attend:   Esalen Massage & Bodywork 175-hour training in Bali, Indonesia And this is what I look like tonight, doing so.  A bucket list item of mine for years has been to get a passport, so a few months ago, I applied for one. I had no particular travel plans but simply wanted to have one. My passport arrived on December 12, 2023. The next day, I received an email about a class I'd dreamed of taking for years, and I realized that I could check off another bucket list item - taking the Esalen massage class taught in Bali by Ellen Watson - if fear didn't stop me. I spent the next two weeks doing some research, learning all the details involved in such an intense and distant trip, and making some big decisions. With trembling hands, on December 26th, I finally hit "send" on my class and airline reservations. On the 27th, I had a meltdown. That's a huge commitment of my time, energy, money, and courage, but the trepidation faded ...
