Class Notes Day 5, Thurs 2/8 - abdomen, neck

"You have a right to experiment with your life. You will make mistakes. And they are right, too."

My feelings: I'm exhausted, frustrated, overwhelmed, uncomfortable (feet/legs still swollen), hungry (can't figure out how to get groceries, only 2 meals/day provided), too hot, need space, tired... and it's only Thursday of the first week.

Made friends with young Hope from Esalen
Made friends with Richard and Edith from Canada
very interesting, intelligent people who are well-coupled

Moved on the big balls
Intro/demo of abdominal work through clothes

finish strokes off foot, hand, or head
then re-start at closest joint to move to new body part

before letting go completely, 1 hand stays on previous joint, other hand lands on new joint before letting the first hand go

"Sneaky Snake" maneuver -
client is supine
hand resting on belly
use my inside hand, palm facing me
slide that hand/forearm through the "elbow hole"
turn that hand palm down and land on anterior delt
while outside hand slides up to land on posterior/medial delt and meet there

"my eyes understand" when we see something clearly but can't put it into words

ALWAYS approach the belly from a long stroke
never land on it directly

belly work -
inferior hand leads and maintains contact
superior hand slides over top of inferior hand at pubis

"rest and digest" vs "fight or flight"
Autonomic nervous system -
1. sympathetic nervous system = fight or flight
2. parasympathetic nervous sytstem = rest and digest

Abdominal massage -
1. Sun and moon
2. Rectus - cross cross over abs and lift flesh
3. Obliques - lift from QL and glide under ribcage
4. Circle belly with inferior hand, slide superior hand under sacrum and hold still

Ask clients -
1. How are you feeling physically?
2. How are you feeling emotionally?

Neck:
Pec long strokes - from clavical to shoulder - ONE AT A TIME!
From head of table, work on superior pecs one at a time
flow from medial to lateral with fingers
start stroke on exhale because client won't be able to inhale fully with pressure
then traction neck, hands on suboccipital, lean back
long neck strokes w/slight L/R swing
5 second holds on knots
ask permission to touch sternum
place your elbow on table, hand on sternum, then rest head against your forearm
OR just support head slightly tilted on your hand
other hand locates spine, work cervical muscles (traps, lateral neck)
return to center, then other side
repeatedly go back and forth between L and R
when done, hold head quietly before releasing.

Feldenkrais - 12 hour pelvic and neck movements - show my clients

  2. I'm a good guinea pig. What you're learning sounds very much like what my friend Judy does - Jin Shin Jyutsu. She's very good. If you like I'll introduce you when you get back to Almost Heaven.
